Suicide Prevention
Beginning in 2005, awareness grew amongst key organisations in Waterford city of the need to respond strategically to the complex issues of suicide and deliberate self-harm.  As a result, A Suicide Prevention Task Group, engaged in a process of consultation with local communities with the objective of listening to their concerns and channelling their ideas into specific recommendations.  Following a series of consultative events, an Action Plan for Suicide Prevention in Waterford City was developed.

The action plan, Reflecting the Challenge, was formally adopted by the Waterford City Development Board and launched in early 2008.  The Suicide Prevention Implementation Working Group, chaired by the HSE Regional Suicide Resource Office, was then established and currently continues to ensure the implementation of the recommendations of the plan.  Recently a part time Suicide Prevention Action Plan Co-ordinator has been employed by Waterford Area Partnership to work with the Implementation Group to progress the actions outlined in the Plan.

For further information about the Action Plan, and the on-going work of realising its recommendations, please contact Michele Gallagher, Coordinator, Suicide Prevention Action Plan, at Waterford Area Partnership, Tel. 051 841740, Email: mgallagher@wap.ie
