Education Intervention Task Group

This members of this task group is made up with 4 schools and 3 community youth groups, who are outside of the DES Education Disadvantage programme.   This group recognises the various factors that contribute to the risk of early school leaving and aims to ensure the development of targeted, preventative and co-ordinated responses, which have enormous potential to reduce this risk. These factors include poor school attendance, poor educational attainment, low self-esteem, poor social skills and behavioural difficulties. The rationale behind this model is that early interventions at primary level, will contribute to increased retention of students right through the secondary education system.  They currently focus on three areas of support – PIE Parents involved in Edcuation, SIS Social Inclusion Element and After School Education Supports.

XLC Project

This project allows actual early school leavers the opportunity to study for and sit state examinations such as the Junior Certificate and Leaving Certificate. Students are supported at a number of different levels in accordance with their own needs.  Some are coached/tutored and study at distance while a large number attend structured classes and receive one to one support in areas such as literacy and study support.  Following receipt of examination results students can access a variety of third level training and employment opportunities.
