That was the message today (April 30) from Cllr John Halligan, Mayor of Waterford, as he announced details of Waterford Health Day which will see a focus on health across the city on Wednesday, May 12.
Waterford Health Day events are scheduled at the Foyer, Theatre Royal, The Mall Waterford; Waterford Institute of Technology; Waterford Health Park; St Brigid’s Family & Community Centre and at a range of workplaces and schools across the city.

May 12 will see a range of health-related activities on offer from walks in the People’s Park to Transition Year cycling training at Newtown School and from yoga and meditation at St Brigid’s to baby massage demonstrations and reflexology at Waterford Health Park.
With Waterford aiming to be designated a healthy city by the World Health Organization, Cllr Halligan said that it is especially important to maintain health and wellbeing in the current economic climate. “With unhealthy levels of stress increasingly evident and people facing growing challenges in their everyday lives, there is a real danger that the recession will be accompanied by a health crisis and a fallback from the progress that had been made in increasing life expectancy.

L-R: Cormac Johnston, General Manager Waterford Health Park, Mayor John Halligan and Michael Winkle, Irish Heart Foundation
“Waterford Health Day can, I hope, provide a useful reminder to all of us of the old adage that health is wealth. By taking simple steps around diet, lifestyle and exercise, all of us can make a real difference to our quality and length of life. The time of year is now right for getting out and about more to enjoy some of the great walking and cycling routes we have access to in Waterford and I’m pleased that there’s a good active dimension to the programme for May 12.
“Having a designated day given over to healthy living and wellbeing was one of the aims I set at the start of my mayoralty and I’m pleased to see what I hope will become an annual event now make so ambitious a start. It’s only right that I acknowledge all of those who’ve worked on the programme at the various venues and – in particular – Waterford Area Partnership and their colleagues in the Waterford Healthy City Group.”
