Waterford Healthy Cities Initiative
Waterford is seeking to become a Healthy City designated by the World Health Organisation (WHO). We want to join with the 80 other cities accross Europe who have achieved the status. The Healthy Cities Project aims to improve the Health of the City, its Environment and its people.
The following organisations are part of Waterford Healthy Cities Project: City Council, H.S.E.(Health Promotion), W.I.T., V.E.C., SIPTU, Waterford Sports Partnership, Waterford Area Partnership, Chamber of Commerce, Community Arts, Waterford Community Forum, Family Resource Centres, Community Development Projects, Older Person Forum and Gardai.

Mission Statement
Using the standards and guidelines set by the World Health Organisations Healthy Cities "Phase V" programme, the Waterford Healthy City Team will produce, promote and keep under review a plan that will, when implemented, improve the health of the city of Waterford through provision of better services, the promotion of a healthy environment and the reduction of health inequalities.

The World Health Organisation Healthy Cities Project is entering a new phase with cities accross Europe and the focus for this Phase is: Caring and supportive encironments, healthy living and healthy urban design.
Support of the Mayor and Waterford City Councillors
At the July meeting of the Waterford City Council the Council have agreed to express interest to becoming a member of the WHO European Healthy Cities Network - 'Phase V' . The team in Waterford will drive this action in Waterford City and strive to provide: A safe physical environment including housing a stable ecosystem an non exploitive community control by the public over decisions affecting basic needs such as, food, water, shelter, income and work an innovative city economy a link with culture appropriate public health and sick care High Health Status.
